Recovery and rehabilitation after a stroke are hard work. You have to spend a considerable amount of time every day exercising your body and mind. Chances are you’re tired and having trouble finding the motivation to get going. But still, you have to get up and train. You need to focus on the outcome of your stroke recovery.
So how can you find that motivation? And how can you train as efficiently as possible? Focus on the impact you want to have. If for example, you want to improve your walking, then every exercise you do should be aimed at significantly impacting your walking. We call this method “impact-based learning”, and it is the foundation of the rehab courses we develop at Strokemark. Here are the most important steps you have to take to apply this method to your recovery.
1. Learn what is important
Let’s have a look at walking again. Maybe you want to improve your walking distance so you are able to meet friends, do your own grocery shopping, or enjoy nature. How could we apply impact-based learning to your exercise regime? Well, first we look at the scientific evidence to learn what factors are important to achieve this goal. Research shows us that you need to increase the amount of time you walk every day, walk at a faster pace, strengthen your affected leg, improve your nutrition, and learn how to focus. Now that you know all this, it is time for the next step: learn you how to improve these factors.
2. Learn how to improve
Ok, you know what is important and why, but how do you put all of that together in a program? That’s where we come in. Strokemark integrated these factors in a 6-week walking course available in our app. You learn what to do and when to do it so that you get just the right amount of training. If you get too little, you won’t improve. And if you do too much, you can actually decrease the impact on your walking. It’s important to strike the right balance, so we take the guesswork out of planning a program and give you a calendar with tips and exercises you need to do each day of the week.
3. Measure the impact
As soon as you start exercising, you need to measure the impact on your walking speed and distance. If you notice that an exercise is becoming less effective, then it’s time to switch something up. Changing either the choice of exercise, the intensity, or sometimes both, can give you better results. Continually adjusting your routine creates a constant trigger for your body and brain to adapt and improve. Within a few weeks of following this concept, you should be able to see some measurable results.
